Study: And the Winner Is… Top Artist Awards In Top 40 & Hot AC Formats
February 28, 2017

Awards Season traditionally ends with the Academy Awards, but in the new tradition of the Oscars and the Miss Universe pageant, Alan Burns and Associates/Strategic Solutions Research have announced the runners-up for Top Artist Awards in the Top 40 and Hot AC formats.

Top 40s #2 artist is 21 Pilots, and artists like Rihanna and Drake make it into the Top 10. Hot AC’s number two artist is Maroon 5, and instead of Rhythmic artists the top 10 includes P!nk and Coldplay. The data comes from the Burns/Strategic study of women 15-54 who listen to contemporary music formats. “Top 40 and Hot AC P1s are distinguished not by the artist they like the most - it’s the same for both formats - but by the rest of the list,” said Strategic EVP Hal Rood.

“The Top 40 and Hot AC formats have grown so similar musically that we decided to look at both formats side-by-side in this week’s data presentation,” said Burns VP Jeff Johnson. “The top preferences of both formats and artists and music styles are nearly identical; the differences are important, but they lie in the secondary and tertiary styles.”

This Thursday’s “What Women Want – 2017” webinar will profile in-depth the most important listeners for each of Top 40 and Hot AC, their radio listening behavior, their preferred music styles and top artists, morning show needs, likelihood of cooperating with rating services like Nielsen, and usage of online streaming. The free 30-minute webinar is scheduled for this Thursday (March 2) at 2pm EST/11am Pacific and you can register by clicking here: What Women Want 2017 Webinar or the What Women Want icons at or
